EarthQuaker Devices’ Plumes is an overdrive pedal based off the all classic tube-screamer circuit everybody knows and loves, but with enough twists EarthQuaker think will help set it up to stand out from the rest. Think tired, old dead horse, but Plumes is a new stick to beat it with. Built with an OpAmp, the Plumes has a higher input impedance of almost 10 mega-ohms. This allows for lower noise, better signal integrity and more chime in the high end – where it counts. Plumes also has three modes to choose from. Mode 1 is symmetrical clipping utilizing a pair of light emitting diodes. This is the crunchiest setting the Plumes has to offer. If you’re playing through the clean channel of your amp, you’ll have an almost three-dimensional drive tone, if it’s through your drive channel, you’re in dirt town. Mode 2 is clean boost mode. This takes away the soft clipping diodes and leaves you with straight OpAmp drive. Mode 3? Mode 3 is an asymmetrical silicon diode arrangement similar to the stock screamer but with more output and clean clarity; the tone some people describe as “transparent”.
