The idea that Darkglass had with the Microtubes X was to enable bass players to use the same tools that a large portion of studio engineers use to get excellent, studio-quality bass tones without forcing you to buy a whole bunch of pedals to split your signal and process both separately. The Microtubes X is a multiband distortion which has a high pass filter and a low pass filter which allows you to choose exactly which frequencies the distortion is affecting which is extremely useful for getting a nice and tight tone while still being beefy in the way that suits your bass, for instance if you were down tuning or using an extended range bass.
